I have been teaching as an adjunct Business professor (Thank you Drs. Butler and Glendenning) for Grace College, Warsaw, Indiana since Fall of 2008, in their Prison Education Program. I have been named coordinator of the Michigan City In. (Indiana State Prison) program for the 2011-2012 school year. Grace College offers both an AA and a BA degree to approximately 300 offenders in 4 Department of Corrections institutions throughout the state. Indiana State is a maximum security prison housing over 2,200 individuals. With more than 90 % of all incarcerated individuals eventually being released into society, this program truly does give offenders an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves. Studies have shown that the recidivism rate of those completing programs similar to this is reduced considerably and as a result, keeps these men and women out of prison and productive members of our communities. While most of my fellow graduates are viewing retirement at this stage, this is an altogether new career venture for me and I am loving it. The only sad thing is that funding for this invaluable program is going to run out at the end of the year.
