Hiram Evans 1975

Just returned to Southern California from a visit to Civil War battlefields around Vicksburg, MS. Was fortunate enough to attend lecture by Park Service personnel on the sesquicentennial days for the Battles of Champion’s Hill and Big Black River Bridge. Mississippians are much nicer to this Hiram Evans than they were to the last one, an officer in Co D of the 23rd Iowa Infantry!

Wish I could visit Champion Hill… My great, great uncle William T. Bennett (he was from Fulton, Illinois) was killed in the battle of Champion Hill on May 16, 1863. I think he was buried in a common grave there.
