Service Day 2011

Tutoring on service dayMore than 750 students, faculty and staff signed up to participate in Central’s Service Day on April 19. Volunteers chose from 70 projects around Central Iowa, including tutoring, visiting seniors, translating documents, bowling with disabled people, removing invasive species and preparing Pella for Tulip Time. One group, led by music faculty Stan Dahl and Mitchell Lutch, picked up trash around Lake Red Rock and used it to fashion musical instruments. “Every experience extends the walls of the classroom and allows us to access the expertise residing in the community,” says Cheri Doane ’98, director of community-based learning. If you have project ideas for next year’s Service Day, please email doanec@central.edu.
