Returning to Italy for a second trip in four years, 40 members of the Central College football team made stops in Rome, Venice, Florence and Trieste May 16-24. The team practiced twice and played against an Italian football team during its nine-day trek.

Although the Dutch dominated the Trieste Mustangs 36-0, coach Jeff McMartin ’90 said that wasn’t the game’s focus. “Both teams had a lot of fun and gained some great memories,” he said. “In Italy, American football is in its infancy. We went to help develop and encourage growth within their program. Football is a club sport in Europe, but the fans they do have are very passionate about the sport and their team.”

Fullback Preston West ’12 got a history lesson. “I really enjoyed the Colosseum with my teammates and learning how the Romans valued honor, teamwork and sacrifice, much like our football team strives to achieve,” he said.
