Marvin Baker ’46

Marvin Baker ’46 and wife Flo celebrated 72 years of marriage July 31. The couple met at Central College in the early 1940’s when Marv was enrolled as a student. According to an article which appeared in the May 13, 1946 issue of the Pella Chronicle, soon after Pearl Harbor the Armed Forces embarked upon a plan whereby boys enrolled in college could enlist in the Armed Forces and still continue their education as long as possible. Consequently, Marvin enrolled in the Navy Flight Training School with Rev. Tunis Prins the coordinator.  Flo worked for Rev. Tunis typing up forms in his office in Graham Hall.  As reported in the Chronicle ” It isn’t all work and no play for the cadets, however. They always look forward to Friday evening, because that is the time when girlfriends arrive to spend the week-end. Of course, the boys have a class in Civil Air Regulations with Marvin Baker Friday evenings, but they never have any fears of the class running overtime. It seems that the instructor is just as eager to get away to see his girl friend as the cadets are to see theirs.” Because of the war, Marv did not graduate from Central until 946.  On July 31, 1943, Rev. Prins married Marvin and Flo at his home and the group picture was taken on the college campus. Great story! I have always been close to Flo and Baker and also good friends with most of the others in the picture. This is the first time I have seen the picture.

Mrs. M W van Doorninck nee Cornelia Lubberden was my grandmother. She graduated from Central Academy in the late 1880’s. She became a country school teacher in Marion County. Two of her children and two of her grandchildren graduated from Central College: Fredrick van Doorninck ’25, Wilma van Doorninck Rempe 28′, Ellen Rempe Hamilton 61′, and William van Doorninck ’63. Wilma Rempe was registrar at Central from 1952-1972.
There is indeed a Central connection here.
